26th April

We hope, like us, you will be moved to watch a new show on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm called Baby Surgeons: Delivering Miracles, which was filmed during 2020 at St George’s Hospital in London – home of the Twins Trust Centre for Research and Clinical Excellence.

Please be warned there are some deeply distressing moments in the series.

The births of twin and triplets will be featured under the expert clinical guidance of Professors Asma Khalil and Basky Thilaganathan.

Other complicated births are featured, and the documentary series follows patients and staff at this leading fetal medicine unit.

It will showcase some of the most pioneering baby surgery performed by specialist teams, both inside and outside of the womb, to save and improve the lives of babies, including twins and triplets.

The first episode follows three expectant mothers navigating complex pregnancies.

Becky's unborn baby has a rare lung tumour that is growing rapidly, Ann-Marie is carrying identical twins, one of which has selective growth restriction jeopardising both baby's chances of surviving, and Randika's dwarfism makes giving birth a difficult proposition.

The series aims to show the highs and lows of parenthood through more complex pregnancies and the decision making that goes into them by both the families and clinical teams.

There are several emotional stories about the miraculous ways that surgeons can give an unborn baby a chance of life.

Professor Asma Khalil, Multiple Pregnancy and Birth Lead at St George’s, said:

I see at least one or more twin or multiple pregnancies every day, many of them experiencing challenges and requiring expert help and support. ‘Baby Surgeons: Delivering Miracles’ features several twin and triplet pregnancies, alongside other complex pregnancies, and we hope that the series raises awareness of these conditions by giving families a voice to share their experiences."

It’s a huge privilege to work with such a wonderful and talented team at St George’s who together have the expertise to provide critical treatment to babies while they are still in the womb.

Please be warned there are some deeply distressing moments in the series.

All episodes will be available on All 4 following transmission of this episode.
