The latest MBBRACE-UK reported has been released today (8 May), revealing new statistics about stillbirth and neonatal death in multiple pregnancy.
Twins Trust has responded to the Perinatal Mortality Surveillance: UK perinatal deaths of babies born in 2023 report. We are calling on the government to make sure that the best care is provided for all families having a multiple pregnancy.
Shauna Leven, Chief Executive of Twins Trust, said: “The latest MBRRACE-UK statistics paint a worrying picture for all families.
“Stillbirth is still three times more likely in a multiple pregnancy, compared to a singleton pregnancy. Neonatal deaths are more than five times more likely in a multiple pregnancy, in comparison to a singleton pregnancy.
“The 2023 statistics show a rise in the number of stillborn multiples. In 2023, 167 sets of multiples were stillborn, compared to 158 in 2021. That number has increased, despite the decline in the number of multiple pregnancies.
“Although it’s important to remember that while the statistics are harrowing, most multiple pregnancies are safe. We would encourage all families to make themselves familiar with the care pathways for multiple births and talk to their midwives if they have any concerns. All multiple birth families must be given the right care throughout their pregnancy.
“We need to tackle the question of why these statistics are not improving, year on year. Twins Trust calls on the government to provide the best care for all families and to ensure every student midwife and current midwives are given the necessary training in managing multiple birth pregnancies.”
