What to expect

We have a fantastic line-up of informative presentations covering preterm birth, patient safety, improving outcomes, breastfeeding, sonography, bereavement, and models of care and choice. The day will also feature live demonstrations, an interactive panel discussion, ‘ask the expert’ and plenty of opportunities to network and share practice.

There is a nominal fee to attend and the event contributes towards your Continuous Professional Development (CPD).  You will receive a CPD certificate following the event, confirming your attendance.

Shauna has worked in senior management roles in the charity sector for more than ten years. She is also a human rights lawyer, a successful campaigner and strategist, but her most important role is mum to boy/girl twins.

Professor Alexander Heazell MBChB(Hons) PhD FRCOG
Professor of Obstetrics, Director of the Tommy’s Stillbirth Research Centre and Regional Lead Obstetrician for the North West of England

Alexander Heazell is Professor of Obstetrics and Director of the Tommy's Stillbirth Research Centre, University of Manchester, and the Regional Lead Obstetrician for the North-West of England.

His research portfolio includes basic science, clinical and qualitative research studies to gain better understanding in order to understand the causes of placental dysfunction, to prevent stillbirth and improve care for parents after stillbirth or perinatal death. He is the national lead for Rainbow Clinic, a specialist clinical service for parents in pregnancy after loss. 

He has received over £6 million of grant income and has published over 280 research papers. He was the lead investigator for the Understanding Antenatal Risk Factors in Twins (funded by Twins Trust and BMFMS). He is currently leading a follow-up evaluation of Version 2 of the SBLCB, MiNESS 20-28 and a multidisciplinary project within the Wellcome LEAP In Utero Programme. He is on the national steering group of the Perinatal Mortality Review Tool in the UK.

Professor of Fetal Medicine and Lead of the Twin and Multiple Pregnancy Service, St George's Hospital, University of London

Vice-President of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

Asma Khalil is a Professor of Fetal Medicine. She is the Obstetric Lead at the National Maternity and Perinatal Audit (NMPA). She gained her MD at the University of London in 2008.

Prof. Asma Khalil has published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, and many published review articles and chapters. She has been awarded many research prizes, both at national and international meetings. She was awarded the 2021 FIGO Women's Awards: Recognising Female Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Her research interests include twin pregnancy, congenital infections, fetal growth restriction and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.

She had a fellowship with the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and is committed to the implementation of clinical guidelines in practice. She is the Lead author of the ISUOG guideline on the role of ultrasound in twins and congenital infections. She also led the guideline team developing the FIGO guideline on twin pregnancies. She was a member of the NICE Guideline Committee updating the Twin and Multiple Pregnancy guidance.

11.50am - The Need for Good Care/Long Term Effects of Poor Care on Families

Richard Kayser
Partner, Irwin Mitchell

Richard is a highly experienced Partner in the Medical Negligence team in London at Irwin Mitchell. Richard has three children, two of whom are identical twin girls, and he is also a member of Twins Trust.

Richard and the team of specialist lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have considerable experience in representing children who have suffered injuries at or around the time of their birth, and these include cases on behalf of multiples. He is particularly passionate about working to improve patient safety and is often invited to NHS Trusts to deliver training on improving maternity and neonatal care.

Frankie Rhodes
Senior Associate Solicitor, Irwin Mitchell
Frankie is an experienced Senior Associate Solicitor who joined Irwin Mitchell in 2025, having practiced in Clinical Negligence law for ten years. Frankie specialises in maternity cases involving injuries to mother and baby, including cerebral palsy claims, perineal tears, psychiatric illnesses, and neonatal deaths. Frankie is passionate about obtaining justice for all people and offering support to bereaved families at inquests. Frankie is a proud triplet, with two non-identical sisters, and a keen supporter of Twins Trust.

12.05pm - Bereavement – Parent Perspective

Louise Bowman
Head of Family Services, Twins Trust

Louise Bowman has worked at Twins Trust for over ten years and is the Head of Family Services. Her role involves overseeing the Family Services team and the services it provides to families including the Twins Trust helpline, courses, online communities, peer supporters, clinics, clubs and bereavement service.

The bereavement service provides support to both families and healthcare professionals and provide a safe place offering information, resources and a community where parents can feel supported by the unique challenge of losing one or more of their babies.

12.25pm - Intrapartum care

Dr Surabhi Nanda
Clinical Lead Fetal Medicine, Consultant Obstetrician, Maternal Fetal Medicine Subspecialist, Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital, Evelina London and Honorary Senior Lecturer, King’s College London.

A Trustee for Twins Trust, Dr Nanda is also Secretary, British Maternal and Fetal Medicine Society, UK and President, Maternity and Newborn Section, Royal Society of Medicine, UK.

She was the Lead author of FIGO “Cancer in Pregnancy” Guideline (2025), Co-author of RCOG Greentop Guideline “NIPT in pregnancy” (draft 2025) and Co-PI UKOSS study on “Non invasive ventilation in Pregnancy” (data collection complete 2025). She is also Executive Board Member – FMF initiative on Maternal Medicine in Pregnancy (2025)

Kim Hinshaw MB BS FRCOG
Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Director of Research & Innovation for 10 years, and a Visiting Professor at Sunderland University

Kim studied medicine in Newcastle upon Tyne and worked as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist in Sunderland from 1994 until his recent retirement from clinical practice. 
Kim was Director of Research & Innovation for 10 years, and a Visiting Professor at Sunderland University, and he remains closely involved in clinical research.

His main clinical interests included high-risk pregnancy, fetal medicine & intrapartum care. Kim is actively involved in multidisciplinary teaching across the UK and abroad, with a particular focus on training in human factors, obstetric emergencies and leadership skills.

Dr Andrew Sharp MBBS, MRCOG, PhD
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Maternal Fetal Medicine

Andrew Sharp is an academic obstetrician with an interest in fetal medicine and complex pregnancies. His main clinical and research interests include preterm birth, multiple pregnancies, and fetal growth restriction. He is the clinical lead for multiple pregnancy and fetal growth at Liverpool Women's Hospital.

His formative research experiences were on placental function and this has been carried forward into his work on fetal growth restriction including the randomised controlled trial of sildenafil for severe early-onset growth restriction: STRIDER UK.

He is an investigator on the Wellcome Trust-funded birth cohort Children Growing Up in Liverpool and Civic Data Cooperative data linkage initiative. He is leading the PLANES study for small for gestational age babies and is a co-applicant in the TRUFFLE2 and FERN studies.

2.40pm - Triplet Support and Antenatal Education

Gemma Gunter
Senior Support Practitioner, Twins Trust

Gemma has been part of Twins Trust for just over ten years, working within the Family Crisis Team to support families during some of their most challenging times. She has developed a particular focus on supporting triplet and higher-order multiple families. This includes extending our home visit service to ensure these families receive the specialist help they need, and more recently, creating and delivering our Preparing for Triplets course.

Alongside this work, Gemma collaborates with colleagues in the Family Services Team to deliver parenting courses and clinics, offering practical advice and emotional support to parents of multiples. Gemma’s background is as a Norland Nanny, and before joining Twins Trust, she worked as a family support worker and parenting trainer within children’s centres. She’s also a proud mum to two boys, aged 13 and 11, who continually remind her of the joys and challenges of family life!

Amy Gallagher
Family Services Manager, Twins Trust

Amy has worked at Twins Trust for eight years, starting in the Membership Team as a Membership Officer before progressing to Courses Coordinator. Following a move to the Family Services Team, she became a Senior Family Services Officer. In addition to managing the courses programme, Amy also took on the breastfeeding service and helped implement and run parenting clinics.

She is now the Family Services Manager, leading a range of support services with a primary focus on the courses programme. Amy is also mum to three children, including boy/girl twins aged 11, who inspired her journey with Twins Trust.

Pam Langford

Pam Langford is an experienced and dedicated midwife with over 20 years of service across a range of maternity care roles. Her career has encompassed positions including Labour Ward Coordinator, Fetal Medicine Specialist Midwife, Autism Midwife, and Multiple Pregnancy Midwife - reflecting her extensive expertise in supporting families through complex pregnancies.

Pam now serves as the Head of Midwifery and Nursing for Women’s Services at East & North Herts NHS Trust, where she provides strategic leadership and oversees the delivery of safe, high-quality care across maternity, gynaecology and neonatal health services. Alongside this, she continues to contribute her specialist knowledge as the Senior Multiple Pregnancy Midwife for the Twins Trust

Stephanie Ernst
TAPS Support Foundation
Stephanie Ernst is an Australian living in the Netherlands and the founder of the TAPS Support Foundation. which she established after finding that parents could barely find plain language information about TAPS online. She now works with parents, researchers and care teams so that family experience is reflected in twin research and care. She is also interested in the social and digital effects of multiple pregnancy, especially how families find evidence based information and peer support online.
Dr Elizabeth Bailey

Liz Bailey registered as a midwife in 2004 and moved into research roles, firstly as a clinical research midwife recruiting to NIHR portfolio and commercial clinical trials and then as a midwifery researcher. Liz undertook her PhD (University of Warwick) on the physiology of contractions and the prevention of pre-term birth. Liz then moved to a Midwife Research Fellow post at Imperial College Healthcare Trust in 2012 and then a joint clinical academic post at UHCW NHS Trust/Coventry University in 2014 where she was also a member of the NIHR 70@70 Senior Research Leaders cohort from 2019 - 2021.

Liz started as the Director of the Elizabeth Bryan Centre for Multiple Births (EBMBC) at Birmingham City University (BCU) in 2021 and is now Professor of Multiple Births and Midwifery. The EBMBC was founded in collaboration with the Multiple Births Foundation and aims to benefit families of twins, triplets and more through excellence in education, practice and research.
